Upcoming Musicians of Another Color: MBLAQ

*sigh*

A pygmy's work is never done.  I'm supposed to be taking a nap right now (being old and all), but I decided to give in and investigate these folks and now I feel I need to just get this out before I snooze (I hope they understand the sacrifice I'm making for them).

Pre-existing boy bands of Korea, your careers are officially over.  Give up now and retire while you still have your dignity.  'Cause ladies, gents, and undecideds, the Ankhesen Mié POC-Understanding-Each-Other Award goes to the glorious Rain and his new group MBLAQ (to all you drooling androphiles, these guys are in their twenties--except for one, but he's still legal--so ogle all you want).

As stated in interview, MBLAQ initially stood for "Music Blaq"; the group's music is based in African-American music and they're not ashamed or afraid to let people know (this would be why they're getting their award, in case any of you are scratching your heads...also Rain recently starred opposite a chocolate dame, igniting further interest in the Blasian lovefest, so that's another reason why he gets his award).

They've got two rappers (who are so adorable), they don't use auto-tune, and they're clearly an athletic bunch.  Speaking of which, singer Joon a.k.a "Honey Abs" (depicted right) played the younger version of Raizo in Ninja Assassin in which he, quite naturally, whooped some ass.

MBLAQ's catchy-ass main single is "Oh Yeah."  In the video they boldly indulge a gothic vampire theme, some b-boy flavor, and horror of horrors, I just noticed that I'm not watching it on mute (sorry...Moi and boy bands do not mix).  I think it's the rappers.  I'm really digging their style.  I might have to start researching Korean hip-hop; like Cantonese, the language is excellent for spittin' some flow, you know?

Anyhoo, I foresee a future for these guys.  For starters, they belong to Rain, who is a master businessman with exceptional know-how in showmanship.  So check 'em out and show 'em some POC support and love.

*yawn*

I listen to lots of Korean music. You should check out Big Bang, Epik High, G-Dragon, 1Tym, Drunken Tiger, Tasha aka Yoon Mi Rae, etc. Please listen to Tasha. She's awesome. One of the best, if not THE best female rappers in South Korea.

  2. Thank you! I've actually been browsing youtube lately and it's hard to find the ones who aren't cutesy, you know?

Btw, my little sister is now officially hooked on MBLAQ.

  3. MBLAQ is awesome! I like how you're open to different types of music particularly those from Asia. I've been on forums where Asian music, be it Korean, Chinese, and whatnot, is regarded as wannabe American music.

  4. I credit my father. He had us listening to everything when we were growing up.

I honestly prefer "traditional" music from around the world, not usually the "hip" and modern stuff. Give me sitars, Bulgarian folk singing, Chinese opera, Maori wailing, or South African choral singing any day over what's popular, you know?
