~ the Hunter
I had the opportunity to sit down and rewatch Ginger Snaps Back: The Beginning (2004) this weekend. To me, a horror movie is best enjoyed at home on a lazy Sunday afternoon. This time, I lent a more critical eye, in addition to drooling over Cree actor Nathaniel Arcand.
This movie gets some really high marks from Moi. It's a low-budget B-Movie horror film in which everything from the clothing to the setting to the music was very well done. Amateur filmmakers would do well to study this film and watch the featurettes. The casting was also handled well, as Mr. Arcand here is one of the top three actors billed.
His characterization was very well done, which surprised me...until I remembered that this was a Canadian production, not American. The writers and directors knew to treat his character with all manner of respect (though I would've preferred a different ending, of course). In the film, Arcand plays the no-nonsense, this-is-my-land, you-can-go-fuck-yourself Hunter (he refuses to share his name). He gets an abundance of close-ups, and majestic shots which evoke his power and prowess. He's fluently bilingual, switching effortlessly from English to Cree and back. He sugarcoats nothing for no one and is nobody's house Negro. In fact, he has this attitude of, "Don't get it twisted. You're here because I allow you to be here. You're alive because I choose to let you live" - and he never fails to bluntly remind people of that fact.
For the newbies, this is a werewolf film; the Hunter surprises the audience (well, at least Moi) by explaining that the Wendigo was not, in fact, indigenous to the New World. He states the English and French brought it with them, along with their other diseases. Ironically, even with all their guns, the Europeans are helpless fending off the Wendigo. Meanwhile, main man here drops them like flies with arrows, knives, and hatchets.

Ah a new movie to check out! I love it--and yum. Just YUM.
ReplyDeleteand yum. Just YUM.
ReplyDeleteIndeed.
I love the Ginger Snaps triologhy escpeaily, Ginger Snaps Back: The Beginning. I've known about Nathaniel Arcand for a long time, but it wasn't until I saw this movie on Youtube that I really started to notice him.
ReplyDeleteCall me crazy, but I thought there was some chestmiry between Brigitte and the Hunter. IDK It might be that my head is just stuck in the gutter. Here are some other movies/TV Shows I've seen Nathaniel in Pathfinder (includes Jay Tavare),Black Cloud, Skins, Doe Boy, Crazy Horse.
You should really watch Into the West, its mini TV Show series that was aired on TNT. It features alot of Native American eye candy like Nathaniel Arcand, Jay Tavare, Michael and Eddie Spears, Tatanka Means, and the list goes on.
[runs off to add to netflix queue]

ReplyDeleteCo-sign. I found it hilarious that the only kiss we see happens between the Hunter and Ginger, but only in Ginger's dreams. In the real world, he just wants to kill her and have done with it.

You read my mind. I'm actually queuing some of those with intent to critique.
@ Neo-Prodigy
Yes, love. You would.
Queueing now. Thank God for Netflix. Nathaniel Arcand is all kinds of sexy-fine hotness. 8 on the Pink Hottie scale.

ReplyDelete*nods* His face gives me ideas.

ReplyDeleteWhich is another thing. Ginger Snaps is an excellent example of a well-executed trilogy. No two films are alike, and their stories work perfectly well independent of one another.
Ah, yes...I'm loving the view.

ReplyDeleteGlad that I'm not the only one. Not gonna lie, but that kiss between Ginger and the Hunter was breathing taking and I don't like the sight of blood.

Agreed.
I'll have to queue up all these great recommendations. I'd heard of this film, but haven't seen it.
ReplyDeleteI don't really like this movie, but I'm very partial to the first Ginger Snaps movie (although the other two aren't exactly bad). I will agree that he is the best thing about this film though.
ReplyDeleteHe certainly is easy on the eyes.
ReplyDeleteOh Ankhesen I cannot thank you enough for introducing this treat!
ReplyDeleteI will agree that he is the best thing about this film though.
ReplyDeleteTBH, if he weren't in it, I wouldn't keep watching it. When he's not onscreen, I fastforward.
I just that piece of shit Pathfinder right the hell back to Netflix. Like...I knew it was going to suck, but I didn't realize how badly it was going to suck. Jay Tavare and Nathaniel Arcand should've NEVER agreed to go anywhere near that shit. No matter how good the pay check was.
