"Slayer", an Exercise in Dreamcasting (Updated)

So, I'm a fan of Buffy, but not Buffy herself.  The way I understand it, that's a popular sentiment.

Thanks to Neo-Prodigy, I've really gotten into dreamcasting.  And now that I hear The Powers That Be want to reboot the Buffyverse, this pygmy has decided to sit back and dream.  But before I get started, let me clarify that I don't want Buffy or Willow or Xander back - in any incarnations.  I've said it before and I'll say it a thousand times again - we need a new Slayer.  And we need casts that are predominantly POC.

Q'Orianka Kilcher as the New Slayer

One of Buffy's strongest writing points was the use of metaphor to creatively tell a story.  For example, creator Joss Whedon placed Sunnydale High School stood on the mouth of Hell, because high school itself is hell.  The mouth of hell's energy influenced a lot of went on at school.  A girl who felt invisible because she was ignored by everyone actually became invisible - very clever.

Imagine what writers could do with a Native American Slayer dealing with daily life in these disunited states.  They wouldn't even need metaphors...get what I'm sayin'?

I nominate the youthful, and stunningly beautiful Q'Orianka Kilcher as the new Slayer.  She could help with naming and characterizing the new Slayer.  And think...Eddie Spears, Jay Tavare, and Nathaniel Arcand could all be regulars on the show...just 'cause.

Freema Agyeman as the New Watcher

To be honest, I was a big fan of Rupert Giles; I had a huge crush on Anthony Stewart Head during the first three seasons.  So by all means' I think the tradition of keeping a tea-drinking, glasses-polishing, nerdy, magical bad-ass British Watcher should continue...and I think Freema Agyeman would be absolutely adorable in that role.

And the interaction between these two would be beyond fascinating...if written by POC, of course.

Keke Palmer as the Rival Slayer

(Thanks, Student of the World!)

I dug the concept of two slayers, and I think that's a tradition that should also be continued.

If Mortal Kombat's Tanya fandom has taught us anything, it's that you can't go wrong with a beautiful black woman playing the bad girl.  And while I'm ashamed to say Keke's been under my radar lately (most likely because of her age), this is one glorious-lookin' gal.  I have high hopes for her.  I think her role as a trash-talking, bad-ass Slayer from the city would be twenty-nine thousand shades of awesome.

America Ferrera as the Rival Slayer's Watcher

After seeing this chica get picked on left and right on Ugly Betty, I think fans would like to see her calling the shots and getting in touch with her dark side.

Also, I'd like to see a non-British Watcher for a change.  I understand that originally, Buffy's second watcher was supposed to be an American go-getter, but the idea was scrapped in favor of "Giles the Next Generation."  I think the idea could be brought back, but with an Hispanic twist.

Besides...America Ferrera is fine as hell.

Necessary Alumni

"Sod off."
Some characters introduced in the Buffyverse simply must return.

Spike, or William the Bloody, is my favorite vampire of all time.  James Marsters owned that role and never once annoyed the audience with it.  Since he himself admits he cannot continue playing an ageless creature, a successor is necessary.  This time, I think we should go with an actual Brit, who looks good in blond, and who can spit venom like a pro.  Naturally...Tom Felton is the best and obvious choice.  And while I understand he's tired of bleaching his hair, it's simply a necessity.

He'd also need to be in a tumultuous on-again-off-again relationship with the Rival Slayer...just 'cause.

"You wish it, I dish it."
Now that I think about it, I want Jenna Ushkowitz to portray Anyanka the Vengeance Demon (thanks again, Student of the World!).  The movie Black Cloud talked a lot about Native American anger and frustration; therefore, it seems only natural that a vengeance demon would be drawn to "the res".  In fact, part of the ongoing storyline would be that she tries to tempt the Slayers with their slaking their own anger through dark magic.

However, for humor's sake, I think we should make this version Anyanka much younger and not very good with her powers.

And whenever she gets upset, we might have to revive the stutter.

  1. Mmmm, ive never been a Whedon fan myself. His writing makes my brain angry.

But I love the cast so far. Maybe Jenna Uskurshowitz could be Willow type character.

  2. LOVING IT!!!

Jenna Ushkowitz totally belongs on a show like this (and FYI, in our "dream", Whedon isn't writing it).

  3. I loved Spike damn he was fine. Tom Felton slick his hair back leather coat yay!

I have written fanfiction in the past when Buffy ended about two slayers (you know since every potential slayer is a slayer now.) But it's lost and probably deleted but I remember it was good.

  4. CAN I GET AN OH HELL YES!!!!!!

I'm a huge Joss Whedonite and I'm down for all things Buffy. That said, it's only Buffy with Joss being apart of it so to me Joss would have to be at the helm.

I completely agree that we need a new slayer. Just as Faith and Fray were allowed to have the torch passed to them, it's time for an WOC to take center stage.

I would actually like to see what Joss does with a POC character as the main protagonist as well as a queer male protagonist. Because I really think he would do some groundbreaking work.

Girl your casting is just pure gold. Freema OH EM GEE!!!!! Loving it.

And you're not alone. I'm in love with Anthony Head. And I STILL want to find out why he's really known as the Ripper.

And I'm gonna have to hand you the internet for the Spike successor, no one else could hold it down like Felton.

    HOWEVER!!!!

We can only allow for Buffy seasons 1-4 of Spike and season 5 of Angel Spike (where he gets his balls back). 6&7 of Edward Cullen 1.0, we cannot abide.

You know what, fuck it. You might just need to use this template as a jumpoff to create a new novel series.

Gurrrrrl......judging you hard for this comment (lol jk, I am a huge Whedon fan though).

    @Ankh
Aw, I like Buffy. She's not my favorite, but I like her just fine. I think it's because I found her mental breakdown in Season 6 so relatable. I have a soft spot for her because of that.

The story AND the actors you suggested are brilliant, btw (Freema is my queen). I'd actually like to see some fanfiction of this.

Or even better, since you're a writer maybe one day you can turn this story into a short comic and have it published by Darkhorse. It could be actual Buffy canon (e.g. the story could be added to re-released version of "Tales of the Slayers," which is apart of Buffy canon). Other writers have done it. It would be awesome if this story could be canon and the whole fandom could enjoy it.

  7. I also liked the show buffy, but wasn't a huge fan of buffy herself. I think to be quite honest, im a little tired of only whites being allowed to be the" chosen ones" and the saviors of the universe etc. If they did remake buffy I personally would like to see an unknown person of color actress cast. There is alot of unknown talent out there, and truth be told women of color aren't often even thought of for roles like this or even auditioned. I do really like the idea of freema for the watcher role. But one thing is certain, they would need a really good writing team and producers, because if they did make buffy a more diverse show, I notice that often writers and producers start out strong with shows like that and then its like they sabotage it, by dropping the ball writing and production wise and networks move the show to unpopular nights etc..

  8. @ Everyone

As you can see, I've added in some of your suggestions.

    @ Neo-Prodigy

Joss would need to be at the helm, but as for the writing...we'd need POC to be doing the nitty-gritty. We don't need anymore blunders like Sineya, and we need people who steer clear of cliches.

Exactly. The show would need a group of people willing to seriously fight for this show the way Mara Brock-Akil fought for Girlfriends.

I like how Whedon chooses topics, and how he "Whedonizes" the dialogue in his scripts, but where subject matter is concerned, he would be out of his element. Especially since he would be catering to a POC audience FIRST, and a white audience second.

Oh, no, no, no...we cannot. We absolutely cannot. Emo Spike needed killed. I liked him just fine without a soul, thank you. The venom was much more...you know, venomous.

When Anya called him a "wimpire" in Season 7, I thought there was no better term.

  10. Yes Keke Palmer I was thinking of her too. I want badass Spike not mopey Spike since Buffy won't be there, there wont be anything for him to brood about they made a blonde Angel when he got his soul.

  11. Not much of a fan of Buffy, but the show reminds me of Yu Yu Hakusho. But I like the casting call should add some Asian actors though.

Oh yeah - it's not just me!!!
