| They've got some serious fans. |
My copy of Unbowed (1999) finally arrived in the mail last week, so naturally, I've been sharing much of the wealth. However, I strongly encourage fans to click the link and order their own copies of this rare DVD, as some of the proceeds go to charity benefiting our Native American siblings.
Tavare plays Waka Mani, a trash-talking, rebellious Lakota warrior who's captured and forced to go to a Negro college. There he deals with racism, falls in love with a Black woman, and learns about hot combs. Locke plays Cleola Banks, a bright student born of poor a dark-skinned woman who's trying to get her daughter married into a proper light-skinned family with money.
From the moment these two see each other, sparks fly with a vengeance.
The appeal is obvious; two good-looking POC hooking up in a film which explores a part of POC history that's often ignored. No wonder getting a copy of this film has been a year-long, uphill battle.

ReplyDeleteI'm with BlackPeopleSufferFromPTSD. I'd stalk the shit out of that fine ass man. Jay makes me want to continue one of my shorties that was inspired by him.
The way he and Tembi look at each other, and the fact that she is compelled to be with him, especially during her time of greatest pain, speaks volumes. And when she tells one of her friends: "We will make our own ways," that shit spoke to me. Waka Mani wanted Cleola just as she was, not as what someone else wanted her to be: the wife of a proud Negro.
I would say something like "That's my Baby's Daddy."

i hope this movie ends with them together, happy somehow, and not one of them dying or getting locked up or whatever the fuck always seems to happen with POC couples. I just want a historical romance that doesn't feature white people all the damn time. This seriously looks like some hot shit and if someone can sorta reassure me it ends well imma slap down the 20 bucks to buy it

I've looked into every movie web page I could find, and didn't find it. I emailed all suggested (jay) pleases, and their was no responds. So I'm giving up. This movie triggered my past. I guess it's
