The Hurt Locker wasn&#39;t much different from Avatar in how it &quot;othered&quot; POC. Both images left a weird taste in my mouth, one more than the other. The images of the Iraqis were just as negative as they&#39;ve always been in US media, just a bit more subtle. I think subtle depictions of negative stereotypes are more dangerous than blatant. At least with Avatar, I was able to turn the conversation into a learning experience (discussion of modern day colonialism). Sometimes I comment about race and sexuality issues and people act like I&#39;m complainin for nothing or simply don&#39;t care at all. Like being a homophobe is only about people that spank gays.
